Computer Nerding

Since the Rochester Marathon is over and I am taking a week or two off, I have had some free time to do some of the things that I have been putting off. Things like cleaning, mowing the lawn and working around the house. Tonight, I upgraded my MythTV system to use the new listing service, SchedulesDirect. While I had the system down, I took the time to get the remote working again (a previous update had broken lircd) and I tried to swap out the video card - I had to put in my desktop’s dual headed NVidia card when the original video card broke. However, although I have a few extra video cards laying around, I had no AGP video cards :(.

I put more RAM in my desktop machine tonight, bringing the total to 1.75 GB. This is not a lot for a desktop machine, but I do not use the desktop for much at all. Yesterday, I installed WeatherGetter (a program I wrote to obtain weather information and output it to arbitrary devices) and configured it to send me an SMS message to my cell phone every night (you know, so I can dress for the weather).

I also reworked some of the cables in the home theater. Since Katie bought David an XBox360 for his birthday, a lot of Gears of War and BioShock has been played. The XBox is linked to the projector via a VGA cable (which has amazing resolution), but the sound was only coming through in stereo. Tonight, I took the optical cable from the DVD player and hooked it into the XBox (for true Dolby sound). The DVD player has a coax digital audio out, which now goes into the receiver - this should still provide good audio for my movies.
