Poison Ivy

Me at the ER

Ever wonder what happens when you are allergic to poison ivy and try to eat it?

I did not try to eat it, but I am severely allergic to poison ivy. At least, some forms. My grandmother has a house in Salem, CT and a cottage in Niantic, CT. As a child, I would make several trips to see my grandmother - if it were in the summer, we would go to Niantic. Winter trips would end at the house in Salem. Without exception, trips to Salem would end up with severe poison ivy (similar to the picture above) - sometimes worse, sometimes not. After high school, I would usually only get to make one or two trips to Connecticut, and since it was during the summer, I usually would end up in Niantic. Ergo, I did not come in contact with poison ivy in Salem since high school (because I rarely went to Salem after high school).

I would get poison ivy from other places, around Rochester, for example. However, when I got poison ivy here, it was very mild, localized and controllable. I assumed that my body was not nearly as reactive to poison ivy in my older years.

I was wrong. I think that Salem has a mutant strain of poison ivy, one that I react very poorly to. Which is why I was at the ER today. I got two shots of epinephrine and some prednisone (steroids), along with diphenhydramine (Benadryl). I am doing much better now - at least I can open my eyes and see!
