Father Murphy’s 5K

Last night was Father Murphy’s 5K race in Chili, NY. This race used to be part of the Trinity Series, but one of the three churches stopped their race last year, so the series does not exist anymore. This race, although new to me, was a special race with a special guest! Dan (a friend from college) flew across the country for this race! I had not seen Dan in years and did not even recognize him until Greg pointed him out. I rode my motorcycle to the event because the weather was so darn good. Fortunately, I found Greg and Mary (and Cassie and Greg’s parents) pretty quickly, so I had a place to stash my stuff (in their trunk). The weather was great and it was looking to be a promising race for everyone.
After meeting up with everyone and preparing for the race, we headed to the start. I ended up running with Dan, but we did not see Greg for too long - he was going fast. You see, Greg has the home court advantage - he lives a mile or so from the church we started at and he runs these roads all the time. Greg ended up running in less than 21 minutes - way better than his previous PR. And this is after coming back from a vacation! So I no longer hold the 5K record :(. But I had a good run with Dan. The course was a bit hilly, but not too bad. The last half mile or so seemed to be mostly uphill. About 75 meters before the finish, Dan took off like a bat out of Hell. I hadn’t even noticed that he started sprinting for a few seconds because I was looking elsewhere. Once I realized it, I took off after him, but there was no way I was going to catch him. Dan ended up finishing under 27 minutes, which was a PR for him. I was behind him by just a few seconds.
After the race, we met up with Dan’s sister and her fiance, along with everyone else. Mary also ran the race with an incredible time. After the race, we all met at my place for food and beverage. Everyone brought something and there was plenty to go around. Even Marie and Corey stopped by! We ended up hanging out for a few hours, but like most race days, people were tired so we did not party hard.
Overall, the race was a success. I felt good, the race went well and I got to see plenty of friends! I did not love the course, but I would run it again next year if Greg and Mary go.
