My Second Win!

Posted by john on August 17, 2008 in Running

This past Saturday, I ran in a race at _____. I cannot post the name because Greg will see and decide to show up next year and steal my thunder. This is the second year in a row that I placed first in my age group, and that is a wonderful feeling - I even lead the pack for the first 15 feet or so! My Garmin GPS battery died about 1/4 mile into the race, so I was running without a pace indicator - the first time in over a year that I have run without one. It may have been a good thing, because I ended up running faster than I thought I would. My overall pace was 6:52, which is about 10 seconds faster than my normal pace. The first mile was 6:35, but I was surely going too fast because I was very tired at the end. This course is fast and fairly flat, though the last 1/2 mile or so is up hill, which makes the finish slightly harder than most other races.

After I finished, I cheered on the rest of the runners and talked to some of the people who work at the facility that hosted the race. I really like the people there - they are fun, friendly and very welcoming. I get to talk to the same lady every year, and she is such a doll! They remember me year after year (even my name)! It sure is a good feeling to have that level of “customer service” at a race!

I stayed for the award ceremony and received a coupon for $15 off of a RoadID - even the prizes at this race are awesome. Again, there was breakfast pizza; with the win, the RoadID and the pizza, I was in Runners Heaven! I look forward to the race next year - I will be in a different age group, so it will be a whole new ball game!
