Interval Training

Today, I attended the Fleet Feet Interval Training. It was a very good experience! I arrived at Fleet Feet shortly before 6pm, and the group of people at the store warmed up with a run to Brighton High School track (about a half mile). We then broke up into teams of two for relays. I have never done relays before, but they are tough! The first relay was 4 sets of 400 meters (each set was a quarter mile, for a total of 1 mile). I ended up with Josh, who was fast. This is good because it positions our “team” for a good time, but bad because I did not have much recovery time inbetween my sets. Josh took the first leg and was in the first (inner) lane (which is the shortest, measuring exactly 400 meters for one loop). Josh started fast and kept it up; by the time he tagged me, we were 20 seconds ahead of the closest team. I kept up the pace and we ended up finishing first by a long shot (what an ego boost!).
The next set was consisted of teams of three, running 200 meter sprints. We would each run one half mileĀ (thats four 200 meter sprints). Josh and I parted ways, and I joined a team of a male and female. Again, we started strong and we finished first (another ego boost)!
After the second relay, we jogged back to Fleet Feet as a cool down. Even though I only ran 2.5 miles, it felt terrific! A huge benefit of a group workout is that I ended up pushing myself way harder than I would have if I were alone. Josh really got the ball rolling at the start, and I used that momentum to really kick some serious butt. Additionally, I got to meet several new people; some familiar faces and some new ones. Lastly, Josh commented on how the speed workouts have really helped him improve. I can definitely see myself doing this on a regular basis. I am pretty tired right now, but I feel like it was a great workout!
